Need Support?
You're Not Alone.
At the Jefferson Teen Center, every staff member is trained to help young people navigate resources in our community because we believe no teen should ever feel alone. This page was created so you can find help even when the center is closed, or if you're not ready to ask an adult directly. Both are okay. Whether you're in crisis or just curious, we're here—no matter the need, no matter your capacity. All staff can support making appointments, arrange transportation, filling out paperwork, and support the reduction of any barriers you might be experiencing when accessing the care you rightly deserve.

Mental Health
What is the difference between providers?
● Psychiatrist: A medical practitioner specializing in diagnosis and treatment of mental
illness through support tools and medications.
● Counselor: A person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or psychological
problems.
● Therapist: A person who provides structured mental health support through conversation for the purpose of creating lasting change.
● Peer Support Specialist/Peer Ally: Someone who is 18+ and is certified to connect the
person to natural support networks meeting them where they are at in their development
of their goals.
Tips on Finding a Therapist
● Your preferences for a therapist: As you begin looking for a therapist make a list of your individual needs/requirements Example: insurance (Amerigroup, Molina etc.), specialities (LGBTQ+, Mood disorders, Autism, PTSD), your preferred therapy type (Talk therapy, DBT, EMDR, ect.) & gender preference (man, woman, non-binary)
● Payment: Some mental health providers provide a sliding scale fee that's based on what you are able to pay while others offer free services or take insurance.
● Insurance: Network providers take insurance but not every kind. Make sure to call them or check their websites to see if they take your insurance.
● Waitlist: If you find a therapist that is a good fit for you but they are not accepting new
patients, give them a call and ask to be put on their waitlist or see if they have a suggestion for a similar provider.
● Talking to a therapist: When emailing or calling to make a therapy inquiry be simple and concise. Tell them your name, contact information, insurance type and short reason for wanting therapy and why you like their practice
● Therapists are people too: Remember that they can be busy so it’s okay to email or call a couple of times to be heard.
● Remember:Sometimes it can feel hard to find a therapist, but don't give up, YOU GOT
THIS!!!

2) Learn how to drive! The state of Washington requires people under the age of 18 to complete a driving course. You can enroll in and complete a driving course, this can be done at the Northwest Driving see info below. You will need to give your Washington Drivers License number to the school. The driving school will support you getting your permit and license.
Ages 18 and older: Once you turn 18, you are not required to enroll in a driving course to get
your license, however it’s recommended. The local driving school is the Northwest Driving
School, see details below.

b) Read through the driving manual - available for free at The Nest, Licensing Department and available to download at https://www.dol.wa.gov/media/61/download?inline
2) Make an appointment to take your written test at the Northwest Driving School or DOL. If you go through the Northwest Driving School and you pass the test, you will get an approval slip which needs to be taken to the DOL to get your driving permit.
a) You need to bring:
i) $35 in Cash
ii) State ID number/Government issued picture Identification. If you do not have a WA State Number, you can pre-apply at https://www.dol.wa.gov/pre-apply-online

4) Once you are able to drive - background a corner, know all the street signs, functions of a car, parallel park - then you can schedule an appointment with the Northwest Driving
school to take the driving test.
a) The driving test costs $75 and provides the students with a vehicle to drive.
5) If you pass the test, the school will give you a passing slip which you then make an appointment with the Department of Licensing, give them the slip, and they will take your picture for the license.
